Parker is having surgery today (Thursday) at 2pm CST.
They are cleaning out his right lung and putting new tubes in where they will hopefully work. The left lung (after the CAT scan) is more sick than they originally thought. But are hopeful that once the right lung starts healing from surgery the left will follow suit.
The family has requested no visitors for Thursday please.
We might not be able to see them but we can SHOWER
them with cards to let them know we're praying...

Day 14, 1-31-07
We're seeing improvement.
Parker had a good night last night.
Yesterday they took his central lines out of his leg
(they are going to culture those to see if they might
be a source of infection/fever) and put a new one in his neck.
PRAISE GOD!
The x-rays this morning show improvement.
He's stable enough to get a CAT scan.

Day 13, 1-30-07
Parker battled a fever all day and through the night on Monday. It never got over 102 but I'm thinking we need it to completely go away to assist in recovery. I might not always get everything completely right because there is so much information given to us daily that by the time I process it some details might come out wrong. On Monday they did not reduce the ventilator at all and it may have been because Dr. Griggs indicates that the collapsed lung is still very sick and still a concern. He is off blood pressure medicine and seemed to do ok. They are slowly reducing Parker's sedation meds. Parker is a cautious child anyway and he is getting a little anxious the more they wake him up. It has to be a little scary for him. Again, we thank you all for all your support, prayers, and words of encouragement. It is helping us get through this process! Love, Kay

Day 12, 1-29-07
PICU at Baptist continued to be a busy place on Sunday. The doctor visited with me early and said they were starting to wean him off the ventilator but he would be slow. He hopes that by mid week Parker will be completely off but told me not to hold him to that time frame. He said Parker's body will let them know when it is time. They turned the vent way down and after a little time the doctor and respiratory therapist came running in the room. Parker was telling them "no" to turning it down that quickly! The doctor indicated that if I didn't see him during the day that meant Parker was doing good! Didn't see him anymore that day, except for passing in the hall! The IDD doctor yesterday indicated that the new cultures they took showed no new infections! And he even indicated that we are going to get Parker through this.
Parker was more awake, responding to voices and trying to open his eyes and see what is going on. He gets a little scared when they start moving or treating him because not being fully awake he doesn't know what is happening to him.
Our prayers are definitely being answered! Love, Kay

Day 11, 1-28-07, Grey's Anatomy!
Parker looks like Parker but with the addition of tubes! Last night was a busy night in the PICU they had a full house which means there are a lot of very sick children. Breaks your heart to see them suffering. Since they were so busy, Parker's nurse let me know that he was one of the more stable kids in PICU which meant they wouldn't be in his room that often. Stable a word I love!
Doctor K (I apologize but I can't spell his name but it is pronounced "key chi") showed me Parker's chest X-ray and you can see some clearing in his lungs. First of all I apologize for any mis-spellings, mis-dates, or mis-grammar that appear anywhere on this site!
On to the GOOD stuff!
Parker is OFF the sedation medication.
Although it will take a few days (say the docs) he is responding to voices and even squeezed his sister's finger today! YEAH! PRAISE GOD!

Day 10, 1-27-07
Parker had a good day yesterday.
He was taken off a couple meds/treatments.
(I'm taking that as a positive sign!)
His fever and blood pressure continue to fluctuate.
Last night they switched him to an air bed that will
allow him to be rotated from side to side.
He reacts when it moves him.
Parker is still sedated and on the vent
but is responding to our voices and
moving his hands and legs a little.
Parker does not like it when they suction
out his mouth so he bites down on the tube,
silly boy :)
Parker got an e-card and email from one of his heroes,
Rick Mitchell, saying that he's praying for him.
We know this lifts Parker's spirit! Thanks, Rick!

Day 9, 1-26-07 *updated

Fever was around 101 all night it did go up to
101.8 around 6am this morning. But that is below 103!
Kay got some rest! PRAISE GOD!
Parker's intensive care doctor this morning felt like we are making progress for the good despite the high fever last night. He said the spike in fever is to be expected. They are starting to take him off some of his breathing treatments but that is a slow process. We truly feel and appreciate all the love and prayers that are coming our way. You all are awesome!! Love, Kay

Day 8, 1-25-07
This morning Parker had some air leaking from the right lung (the one that collapsed). They pulled out the chest tube and put in a new one, so far that is helping. This lung keeps giving them "fits".
Please pray for NO MORE FITS!
They want to do a CAT scan on the above mentioned lung but can not do that until Parker's body is stable enough to move to the CAT scan machine.
Please pray for a stable Parker.
Contrary to some rumors going around, there is no time frame on the ventilator. The doctors' say Parker's body will tell them when it's time for the ventilator to come off.
Everything else is going OK.
He's headed in the right direction.
The doctors' say there should be bigger changes soon.
(Kay REALLY needs this.)

UPDATE on BLOOD Donations
For anyone interested in donating blood for Parker, the best thing to do is to go to any one of the OBI blood centers in the state and tell them that they would like to make a CREDIT DONATION for Parker Jenkins who is in Integris Baptist Medical Center. Any blood type will be accepted and the Jenkins family will receive credit against the processing fee for any blood that Parker may have to use.

Day 7, 1-24-07
Parker's condition is the same as yesterday so at least we are not taking any steps back in this recovery progress. The doctors still say that this is going to be a slow process because of how sick he is and will continue to be on the ventilator a little longer than expected. He is being monitored very closely and is getting great care! Robert and I are starting to pace ourselves for this long recovery. I am going home in the morning for a few hours returning around 10 or 11 so that Robert can go to work. Penney (my sister) is still in Oklahoma, she comes to stay some nights so that I can get some sleep. The outpouring of love, prayers and help is so awesome! It is a great comfort to us and we are truly blessed to have so many wonderful people supporting our family! Love to all, Kay

BLOOD DONATIONS
Donating blood and telling them "Parker Jenkins" will give Parker 'blood-credit' for the blood he is receiving. It doesn't matter what type of blood you have Parker still gets the credit.
Go to the North OBI office (50th & Portland) and tell them you want "Parker Jenkins" grandson of Ted Joule (pronounced jewel) to have the credit. (Ted worked at the OBI North office for many years.)

Day 5 pm, 1-22-07
The infectious disease doctor (IDD) has identified two bacteria in his blood that are very treatable. One of the bacteria is Staph and the other is some medical term I can't remember how to pronounce or spell!
NO FLU! The IDD felt it was a false positive.
IDD is concerned that a kid can have 3-4 bacteria at the same time.
IDD will be running more tests to see what's going on.
PRAISES:
His white blood count is back to normal :).
They are able to suction more fluid out of his lungs :) but they are still very full.

Day 4, 1-21-07
First, I want to say thank you to everyone for your prayers! It is so huge to know that your son is loved by so many and hundreds of prayers being lifted up in his name! Parker's doctor is Dr. Griggs he is an incredible doctor and is well known to be one of the best around. We are confident that he is medically in the best of hands and no doubt spiritually in the best of hands.
Parker had a rough day on Friday he had fevers of 103 & 104 .5 for most of the day but it finally broke in the evening and remained under 102 after that. After several hours of fighting these fevers the doctor told us to start touching him and letting him know that we were there with him. Thank you, thank you! That had to be one of the hardest things for me not to touch him or talk to him!! Saturday brought a good day for him. The doctor said he saw a "fraction" of improvement -- at this point I'll take anything. This morning around 5am his right lung collapsed. Not anything the doctor was surprised about given how sick his lungs are and they were on top of the situation and have placed a tube in to drain off the fluid. So I am confident that this isn't a huge set back. The meds seem to be getting a hold of the infections so they are seeing a little improvement there but the lungs will be slow healing and of course a process that we can't be rushed.
He still is a very sick boy but I'm confident we are headed in the right direction. Thank you again for all your prayers, emails and encouragement.

Day 2, 1-19-07
We admitted him to the hospital yesterday afternoon at 3:45 and at 1:30 am he was moved to intensive care (at Baptist). He is in critical condition with pneumonia and strep. They have him on a ventilator only so he won't have to work so hard at breathing. He is sedated and we are not able to touch or talk to him because they don't want us stimulating him they want his body to concentrate on fighting this infection. He is getting the best of care and I know that he will pull through this. We are probably looking at 3 or 4 days on the ventilator.
